ART DIRECTION | AMERICAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MAGAZINE (ACCJ JOURNAL)
The ACCJ Journal is a monthly business and technology magazine. As art director, I was expected to instill the brand with new energy and an opportunity in 2009 to re-design the magazine allowed me to use my full creative flair. The re-design went beyond cosmetic changes and introduced new sections and a new masthead of talent. My responsibilities included producing feature spreads from concept through to design and artwork, commissioning and direction of photographers and illustrators, budget control, and the day-to-day running of the magazine in addition to providing online and internal marketing solutions.

KANSAI SCENE MAGAZINE

Kansai Scene is a Monthly lifestyle magazine published in Tokyo. Working closely with a team of writers and researchers who were based in Osaka we crafted this monthly magazine and tailored it to the needs of the international community in Osaka Japan. Osaka being the historical and commercial centre of Japan and having a huge international community gave us a great foundation to help build a magazine that could function both as a guide to events, entertainment and restaurants as well as being about Osaka lifestyle, fashion and culture. The magazine would often be the first introduction into Osaka’s rich culture for international traveller’s arriving and a valuable commodity for those living in Osaka long term.

Bilingual Japanese & English brochures for Ritz-carlton luxury hotels. The client requested a bilingual brochure that would appeal to both Japanese and western sense of luxury and sophistication. Working closely with the client I created an ascetically simple and concise brochure that was extremely well received.

In 2009 I redesigned a prestigious business and technology magazine. Due to the magazine being so well received by the business community I was asked to design a Japanese version to extend the reach of the brand into Tokyos corporate mainstream. I worked closely with a translator to ensure the features and opinion pieces were perfect grammatically and read like a native had written them. The challenge was to ensure the magazine looked and felt like a Japanese publication to attract CEO’s and business leaders, this in turn would ensure the magazine remained relevant and engaging.

NOT SO LOST IN TRANSLATION

In 2006, I relocated to Japan and became involved in Tokyo’s design industry. The pool of international designers working successfully in the industry is relatively small, which made it vitally important to overcome challenges quickly. Working as an art director alongside Japanese and international creative teams was an inspiration. Having the opportunity to work on some of Japan’s leading brands over the six years I was in Tokyo proved to be an extremely valuable learning curve.
